#568 of 678 scored in California by Solar.com Installer Score

How does Sunrun compare where you live? Rankings are local; an installer that leads one city can trail in the next. See how they rank in your city →

Why this differs from star ratings: most five-star reviews say “great company” and stop, and star averages reward that. These category scores only count reviews with concrete evidence, weighted by recency and the reviewer’s track record. A company can hold a strong star average while specific categories score lower; that gap is usually where the real story is. Categories with more complaints than praise are the questions worth asking any bidder, not necessarily dealbreakers.

What this data covers: *Counts on this page, including the totals up top, come from investor-owned-utility interconnection records (SCE, SDG&E, PG&E). Work in municipal-utility territory, such as LADWP or city utilities, and outside California does not appear here, so this company's true totals are higher than shown. Unlike the county rankings, this profile also shows counties below the 250-install ranking floor.

Sunrun reviews: what customers say

An independent synthesis of published customer feedback across Google and Yelp, updated September 28, 2026. Green marks praise, amber mixed experiences, red complaints.

Sales & proposal integrity

Sales Integrity6.8/10

Reviewers are often positive about Sunrun’s sales conversations, describing reps as clear, patient, and low-pressure. At the same time, a meaningful minority report aggressive outreach or say sales expectations and savings did not match later experience.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Clear, low-pressure sales help. Many reviewers describe the sales process as straightforward and helpful, with reps taking time to explain usage, costs, and contract details. These customers often say they felt informed rather than pushed. Representative review excerpt: "No sales talk, no pressure, just honest answers that made it easy to understand."

Professional guidance and patience. Reviewers also praise representatives who answer questions carefully and keep the conversation focused on understanding the system. This comes through as a recurring strength in the sales experience. Representative review excerpt: "My first introduction to Sunrun was with Tanner Huber who was professional, polite, and patiently answered all my questions."

Pushy outreach and unmet expectations. Complaints focus on aggressive door-to-door outreach and on cases where the sales pitch or savings picture did not match the eventual outcome. Some reviewers say the expectations set during the proposal stage were too optimistic. Representative review excerpt: "I have repeatedly and explicitly told their door-to-door reps that we are not interested, yet they continue to return to our property and aggressively push their sales pitches."

Price & financing transparency

Price Transparency3.1/10

This is one of the most critical categories in the review set. Some customers report good savings or favorable rate structures, but complaints heavily outnumber praise and center on unclear billing, lease terms, surprise costs, refunds, and incentive timing.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Unclear costs and recurring monthly charges. A large share of complaints says the final payment structure felt confusing or more expensive than expected, including lease charges layered on top of utility bills. Reviewers also describe billing problems tied to refund issues, incentive timing, and surprise costs. Representative review excerpt: "They refuse to offer a straightforward purchase option and instead push customers into a 25-year lease at $340 per month—on top of charging for every kilowatt of electricity consumed."

Some customers report savings. A smaller group says the pricing structure worked well for them and led to lower electric bills. These reviews typically frame the plan as financially worthwhile in practice. Representative review excerpt: "Leased system and great savings off our electric bill!"

Helpful price guidance in some cases. A few reviewers say they received useful pricing help and felt taken care of through the process. These comments are present, but they are much less common than the complaints. Representative review excerpt: "Zade definitely hooked it up on the price and took great care of us throughout the process."

Communication & coordination

Communication6.0/10

Feedback on communication is mixed but leans slightly positive overall. Reviewers frequently praise responsive follow-through and regular updates, while complaints focus on weak handoffs, unclear status updates, and trouble getting help when something goes wrong.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Responsive follow-through. Many reviewers say staff kept them informed and followed through on what they promised. These comments often describe a smoother experience from start to finish. Representative review excerpt: "He was responsive, followed through on everything he said he would do, and kept me informed throughout the process."

Ongoing check-ins after install. Some customers note that Sunrun continued to check in after installation to make sure the system was working and questions were answered. That post-install contact is a recurring positive theme. Representative review excerpt: "Even after my solar installation was completed in 2022, they continued to check in to ensure my system was performing as it should and that any questions or concerns were..."

Poor responsiveness when issues arise. Complaints describe slow responses, unclear ownership, and difficulty getting a clear answer or resolution after a problem is reported. Some reviewers say follow-up was especially weak once the project was already underway or complete. Representative review excerpt: "As of this review, I have repeatedly followed up but have neither received the gift card nor a clear explanation of when it will arrive."

Timeline reliability

Timeline Reliability5.1/10

Timeline feedback is mixed, with many reviewers acknowledging that permitting, inspections, and utility steps can take time. Still, a substantial complaint set says delays, rescheduling, or restart requirements pushed work and activation much longer than expected.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Process can be smooth once approvals are done. Positive reviews say the timeline was well managed overall, even when some steps took longer than expected. Several customers describe clear explanations and an organized sequence through installation and activation. Representative review excerpt: "The entire process & time-line of initial signing up, until official transition from NV Energy to Sunrun Solar was excellently accomlished, along with highly organized, well coordinated sequential schedulings throughout..."

Delays explained by permitting or utility steps. Some reviewers accept that permitting and utility requirements extended the schedule, but still viewed the eventual installation positively. These comments are best read as mixed rather than fully negative. Representative review excerpt: "The approval process was long but once that was over, installation was quick and I've had no issues since."

Delays and activation problems. Complaints focus on missed timing, long waits, and situations where customers were left waiting for activation or follow-up work. Some reviewers also describe production being delayed while they continued to wait for support. Representative review excerpt: "I have been informed that if I cannot schedule within the initial 30-day period, I will be forced to restart the entire process, which will further delay my roof repairs..."

Workmanship & site care

Workmanship6.3/10

Reviews of installation quality are mostly positive, with many customers praising professional crews, efficient work, and cleanup. The complaint pattern is still material, though, and centers on roof damage, loose equipment, leaks, and slow repair follow-up.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Professional, efficient crews. Many reviewers describe the installation crews as courteous, efficient, and professional on site. Clean-up and general property care are also commonly mentioned in positive comments. Representative review excerpt: "The installation crew was outstanding—professional, courteous, and highly efficient."

Property left clean and tidy. Some customers specifically say the crew left the property as they found it. These reviews suggest solid site care during and after the install. Representative review excerpt: "They left my property as they found it, nice and clean."

Roof and equipment issues. Complaints describe installation-related damage or equipment coming loose after the job was finished. Reviewers also report slow or repeated attempts to get repairs or reinstallation handled. Representative review excerpt: "Had them install solar on my house not even a year later the conduit came off the house when we had high winds one day because it wasnt installed properly..."

Long-term support & performance

Long-Term Support7.0/10

Long-term support and system performance trend positive overall, with many reviewers saying their systems continue to work well and that follow-up support is helpful. There are still recurring complaints about underperformance, service delays, and unresolved tickets, so the section is positive but not complaint-free.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Systems performing well over time. Many reviewers say their systems have continued to perform as intended well after installation. These comments often pair reliability with satisfaction about the overall setup. Representative review excerpt: "Have a system that was setup and installed 9 years ago and performs as it was intended."

Helpful post-install follow-up. Some customers report that Sunrun continued to check in after installation and helped address questions or concerns. This is one of the stronger areas in the review set. Representative review excerpt: "Even after my solar installation was completed in 2022, they continued to check in to ensure my system was performing as it should and that any questions or concerns were..."

Service gaps and unresolved issues. Complaints describe systems underperforming, components needing attention, or service tickets closing without a home visit. Reviewers also report difficulty getting timely help when repairs are needed. Representative review excerpt: "I have created FOUR separate service tickets regarding concerns with my solar system, and every single one has been closed without anyone coming to my home to inspect the system."

Bottom line: Across 1,830 substantive reviews, Sunrun’s strongest themes are sales that many customers find clear and low-pressure, plus generally solid long-term support and performance. The main weakness is pricing and financing transparency, where complaints about billing, lease terms, and unexpected costs are frequent and drive the lowest category score. Timelines, communication, and workmanship land in the middle: many positive experiences exist, but delays, follow-up gaps, and some installation-related issues are recurring enough to matter.

How this is built: category scores and summaries weigh the company's full published rating record (662 Google reviews averaging 4.1 stars), the most recent and most relevant review texts, and recurring feedback themes verified acrossGoogle and Yelp. Important context: this chart shows investor-owned-utility records only. Companies that shift work toward municipal-utility territory (LADWP and city power departments) or other states will show declining bars here even while building steadily elsewhere, and 2025-26 records also lag real installation dates. Treat this as a partial window, not the company's full trajectory.

How we built this data

Methodology: Counts are residential PV interconnections in investor-owned-utility territory (PG&E, SCE, SDG&E) per CPUC Rule 21 public records through May 2026. Postal and name variants are merged. Municipal utility territory such as LADWP, Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank, Anaheim, and Riverside Public Utilities is not included in those CPUC counts. Counts show recorded installations, not quality ratings. Reported costs are self-reported on owned-system interconnections. No installer can pay for placement.

Who we are: Solar.com is a solar marketplace — we connect homeowners with installers and earn a fee when projects move forward. These rankings and scores are computed from public installation records and published customer reviews. No installer can pay for placement, and no installer — including those we work with — can pay to change a score.
